EDUCATION SESSIONS

– Beyond the Buzz: Calculating & Maximizing the ROI of Your Bookstore Events | Poolside 123
Events, everybody's doing them. But which events make money and which are a drain on your resources? This session delivers a tool to analyze the return on investment (ROI) of your event program. You'll learn how to consider attendance, ticketing, payroll, space costs and marketing in an effort to maximize profitability and achieve sustainability, no matter the size of your bookstore. Presented by Nicole Magistro, former owner of The Bookworm of Edwards for nearly two decades, who currently serves as an active advisor with The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates.

– Like a Family But Not a Family: Creating Effective Communications and Positive Culture from the Top Down | Patio
Positive store culture, and effective communication don't happen by accident.  You have to have a well crafted strategy, process, and then you have put it into practice.  During this session you will learn how to put together a good plan for culture building, and how to communicate effectively with all members of your organization.  At the end of this session you will possess tools based on best practices that you can immediately implement when you return to your store. Presented by Tim Smith, Operations Manager at Schuler Books in Michigan, and Professional Booksellers School instructor.

EDUCATION SESSIONS

– Dynamic Inventory Management: Budgeting for Frontlist Buying and Beyond | Poolside 123
Inventory management is the biggest lever to financial success, and yet buying and returning without a budget is a common misstep for indie bookstores. This session will teach you how to develop a dynamic inventory management budget, broken down by frontlist, restock, event, non-book and return categories. To maximize learning, bring your store's monthly and annual sales by category to this session. Presented by Nicole Magistro, former owner of The Bookworm of Edwards for nearly two decades, who currently serves as an active advisor with The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates.

– The Art of Passive Retail: Creating a Store Environment Where Books & Gifts Sell Themselves | Patio
One of the best experiences in a well curated bookstore is discovering that book or sideline you didn't even know you wanted.  In this session you will learn about the power of effective merchandising and displays, how to design and write effective shelf talkers, and creating passive ways to increase sales.  When you leave this class you will have ideas, and resources that will be easy to implement while creating immediate impact. Presented by Tim Smith, Operations Manager at Schuler Books in Michigan, and Professional Booksellers School instructor.

GET THE MOST OUT OF SPRINGCON 2026

GET READY TO LEARN

  • Don’t miss the education and networking sessions throughout the conference. You can learn a lot, even if a session seems like it isn’t a fit for your store.
  • You’ll always learn something new and get some great ideas from your colleagues.
  • Participate: Share your expertise (you know more than you think you do!), and ask questions.

DISCOVER AUTHORS & BOOKS

  • Most of the authors coming to SpringCon live in our region (many in Texas). Hear their stories, chat with them (and get your books signed), and make plans to invite them to your store.
  • The Romance Speed Round is free, and all other author event tickets are only $15.00 (breakfast or lunch included), so attend them all!
  • Attend Pick of the Lists: There is nothing like hearing reps talk about their favorite titles.

PRACTICE ARC ETIQUETTE:

    • Free ARCs or finished books will be available for each of our author events, and in the Galley Room.
    • Remember: Books and ARCs are for promotional purposes only, they should NOT be resold.
    • ARCs are in short supply, please only take the books you personally plan to read and review.

MAKE CONNECTIONS

  • Meet your fellow booksellers!
  • The easiest conversation starters for any book event: Ask about their store. (Where are they located? How long have they been in business? Do they have a specialty? What is their greatest challenge? Etc.)
  • Share your business card and social media info so you can stay connected.
  • Introduce yourself to the MPIBA staff and Board members.
  • The receptions are a great opportunity to make connections with local reps and vendors.
  • Attend the optional “after hours” events to spend even more time with your new friends!

WHAT TO WEAR & BRING

  • Come dressed as you would at your own store, or how you feel most comfortable.
  • If you’re attending an off-site dinner, wear whatever is appropriate for the restaurant.
  • See below for more industry dinner etiquette tips.
  • Comfortable shoes for walking, and layers, as hotel meeting rooms can be cold.
  • A reusable coffee cup, and your water bottle to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Business cards or store bookmarks to hand out, and a one-sheet about your store if you have one.

HAVE A SHIPPING PLAN

  • There are multiple FedEx and UPS shipping facilities near the hotel.
  • Neither the Menger Hotel nor the MPIBA staff can facilitate shipping books back to your store.

GET THE MOST OUT OF THE GIFT VENDOR SHOWCASE

BUY SWAG, SUPPORT BINC

  • BOOKS Y’ALL! Check out this year’s SpringCon Swag (all sales benefit Binc). Order early to have it before you arrive in San Antonio.

PLAN TIME WHEN YOU GET BACK TO YOUR STORE TO:

  • Review and share what you learned in the education and networking sessions.
  • Follow-up with new publisher and vendor contacts.
  • Place orders using Show Specials.
  • Save the date for FallCon 2026, October 4-7, Denver, Colorado!

ASK US QUESTIONS & GIVE US FEEDBACK

We’re here to help! And we’d love to hear your comments and suggestions. Find the MPIBA staff at the show registration desk, or look for our Staff and Board badges during the events.

Etiquette Tips for Publisher/Industry Dinners:

During book industry events, many publishers, vendors, and industry attendees plan dinners, often with authors!, and invite booksellers to attend. These dinners are held at local restaurants and are generally intimate. Industry dinners allow publishers, other vendors and service providers to get to know more about you and your store – and how best to work with you going forward. Here are some tips to help you navigate industry dinners:

RSVP ASAP:

  • If you receive a dinner invitation, it’s important to respond as soon as possible whether you can accept the invitation or not.

Go It Alone:

  • If your store receives multiple invitations to the same dinner, or to several different dinners, consider splitting up staff to maximize the store's networking opportunities.

Be Prepared:

  • Familiarize yourself with your host(s) and any authors that are attending the dinner.
  • Look up the restaurant so you can plan for appropriate attire.
  • Find out where the restaurant is located and decide how you’ll get there if you haven’t received instructions. (If transportation is a problem for you, let your host know ahead of time.)
  • Let your host know of any dietary restrictions so they can plan to accommodate your needs.

Let Them Know If Your Plans Change:

  • If you can no longer attend, let the publisher know as soon as possible so they can fill your seat. If you have to cancel, try to connect with the publisher in a different way during the conference.

Show Your Appreciation:

  • Plan to read any books provided at a dinner and review them in Edelweiss to share with the publisher, as well as give the appropriate books some extra promotions via your store.
  • Once you’re back in your store, send a thank you email, or a lovely written note, to let your host know how much you appreciated the invitation and dinner.

If You Don’t Get Invited to Dinner:

  • If you don’t receive any dinner invitations, take the opportunity to go to dinner with bookselling colleagues or reach out to your own publisher or industry contacts. Make sure to attend the end-of-day activities each day, as these are a great chance to mingle and network.
