Bookseller Summer School: Tips & Tricks for Recognizing & Battling "Soft" Book Bans
Round-table idea sharing session.
Teachers and librarians all across the country are feeling the pressure from school boards and more to remove books that share the stories of our LGBTQ, Indigenous, Black and Brown, and Palestinian communities, even in places where there are laws in place to protect them from book bannings. This is leading librarians to make choices about the books and authors they bring into the schools based on those fears. These soft bans keep books out of the hands of children who need them. What do these soft bans look like? How do you know when they are happening in your schools? How do they affect our bookstores and as Samira Ahmed addressed in her Keynote at Children's Institute, how can I be brave?
