Fall Discovery Show 2017

Join MPIBA for this extraordinary, energetic Show filled with “discovery.”

Make plans to join us in Denver on October 12-14, 2017, to participate in our Fall Discovery Show which celebrates bookselling and the MPIBA family.

Last year, we welcomed 220 booksellers from our vast, 12-state region in the West; 250 publishers, exhibitors, sales reps, speakers, and guests; and 65 authors to the Show.

Children’s Author & Illustrator Breakfast 2016: Sarah Taylor from The Bookworm of Edwards in Edwards, Colorado, and Abbey Paxton from BookBar in Denver, Colorado, wowed the crowd with their introductory song, “Get Your Wiggles Out.”

“It was a family celebration; this just happens to be a really big family.”

If you don’t work in the book trade, it’s hard to explain what happens at an event like the Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association Fall Discovery Show. Call it a family reunion. No, better than that – a family gathering, albeit one with more fun (think Literary Trivia night or Books & Brews afternoon) than squabbles; more friendships than rivalries; and, most importantly, a shared mission. How do you explain that to an outsider? You just can’t. You have to be here.  –Shelf Awareness

“Long known for its enthusiastic gathering of booksellers …”

The opening breakfast … set the tone at this year’s Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association Discovery Show. Long known for its enthusiastic gathering of booksellers from Texas to the Canadian border and beyond, this year booksellers in the region had even more to celebrate with an influx of 10 new member bookstores in 2015 [and 15 in 2016], plus 21 new professional members over the past year.  –Publishers Weekly

Mountains & Plains offers opportunities for authors to meet booksellers, talk about and sign books, and make their experience at the Fall Discovery Show productive and memorable.

We also have multiple avenues for you to promote your company, including reserving an exhibit table (wall, full table, or half table sizes) in the gorgeous Colorado Ballroom at The Renaissance Hotel so that your company, titles, authors, and sidelines products will have visibility to the booksellers who visit the hall on Thursday evening and all day Friday.

Gala Opening Reception:

MPIBA invites exhibiting publishers to attend the Gala Opening Reception on Thursday, October 12. This exciting event includes publisher exhibits, cash bars, hors d’oeuvres, and lots of bookseller attendees! You must be an exhibitor with a reserved table in order to bring authors to sign at the Opening Reception. $100 fee per author.

Exhibit Hall:

MPIBA invites exhibiting publishers to have 1-2 authors at their exhibit table to greet booksellers and sign books during exhibit hall hours on Thursday, October 12 and Friday, October 13. We recommend 50 books per author for large publishers, and 25 books per author for small publishers. $100 fee per author.

Meal Events:

These coveted Fall Discovery Show author slots are sponsored by publishers who have exciting fall, winter, and spring titles to promote, and who contact MPIBA early in the year to reserve.

A meal event author appearance is handled by MPIBA review and invitation only, and incurs a sponsorship fee in addition to any other exhibitor and promotion fees.

An author appearance also requires a separately-completed “Author and Full Meal Table Reservation Form for Publicists,” which will be available in Summer 2017.

An author appearance also requires books in quantity pre-shipped to MPIBA’s drayage company (150 books for all meal events except Author Banquet which requires 200 books).

If your author has been invited and confirmed by MPIBA, please click here to download Author Guidelines.

Sponsor an event at right and your logo and company name will be featured on signage, in the Directory,  and in announcements.

Bookseller Welcome Bag:

Keepsake bags are given to every bookseller at registration. You can elect to insert a brochure, bookmark, flyer, etc., for this promotion.

Directory Advertisement:

This beautiful 52-page directory is given to every attendee at registration. Booksellers usually receive it on Wednesday afternoon and study it in their hotel room before the events begin on Thursday.

A full page, full color ad will direct attention to the authors, titles, and specials you are promoting at the show. The directory lists detailed information about authors, events, sessions, exhibitors, exhibit hall layout, show specials, Winter Catalog titles, and much more!

Show Specials:

Drive bookseller traffic to your exhibit table with special offers. These are published in the Directory and in advance of the show.

e-Blast Ad:

Get your message out to all MPIBA bookseller e-subscribers in advance of the Show, by running a dedicated e-Blast ad highlighting an attending author or a title you’ll be featuring at your exhibit table.

Pick of the Lists:

The highlight of the Fall Discovery Show for many booksellers! Children’s, morning, and afternoon sessions are conducted by publisher representatives and run most of the day on Thursday, October 12.

Participants must have at least five Fall/Winter 2017 or Spring 2018 titles to discuss in order to be eligible for Pick of the Lists.

ABA Presents: Maximizing Backlist

A bookstore’s frontlist sales which are spurred by handselling, current events, reviews, and media coverage are essential. But when it comes to bottom-line profits, backlist titles with proven track records can be an equal, and potentially more manageable, asset. In this session, ABA senior staff and Board members will explore proven ways to market, promote, and sell backlist titles. The session will include a discussion of advantageous backlist terms now being offered by some publishers as well as best practices for successfully managing your store’s cash flow and return on investment.

Edelweiss: How to Use Analytical Tools
to “Work Better, Read More”
Presenter: Joe Foster, Above the Treeline/Edelweiss
One of the biggest challenges facing booksellers is effective inventory management. Picking the right collection of books is perhaps the greatest service provided to customers, but it can also be time-consuming. It’s an art to successfully increase turns while maintaining or improving margins. But science can help. By using data analytics to uncover sales trends and benchmark performance, you can take much of the guesswork out of your operations. In this session, you will learn how to use the data in Edelweiss+Analytics to guide your stocking decisions and increase efficiency.

Trademarking Your Store
Presenter: Steve Weigler
This Denver-based trademark attorney will discuss how to start the trademarking process for your store and why it’s important to do so.

Back Office Operations
Presenters: Nicole Magistro, The Bookworm of Edwards; Ron Krall, Off the Beaten Path
