The purpose of these annual awards is to honor outstanding books which are set in our region.
Criteria
•A significant aspect of the book must relate to the Mountains & Plains region of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, or Wyoming.
•To be eligible for the Awards presented in spring of 2008, the book must have been published for the first time within the year under consideration, which runs from October 1, 2006 to September 30, 2007.
•The six possible Award Categories are: Children's Chapter Book, Children’s Picture Book, Adult Fiction, Adult Nonfiction, Regional Reference, and The Arts (including poetry).
Nominating Procedure
•Publishers as well as booksellers are welcome to nominate books throughout the year. Publishers will be charged a $50 submission fee per title and are required to send 5 copies of each book to the MPIBA office along with the submission fee. In the event that a book is nominated by a bookseller, the publisher will be invoiced for the requisite fee. The form below may be used for nominating.
Judging
•There are four panels of three judges, one each for Adult Fiction, Adult NonFiction, Regional Reference and The Arts, and Children’s.
•The judges represent a cross-section of the book community in our region, including at various times members of the media, librarians, and booksellers.
Prizes and Promotion
•Press releases are sent out nationally and regionally.
•The Awards themselves are presented to the authors at a banquet as part of the MPIBA Spring Meeting.
•Each author receives a framed copy of the Regional Book Award poster.
•MPIBA’s 235 bookstores receive free posters and other promotional materials to help them actively promote the winning titles.
