About Mountains & Plains

Welcome to the website for the Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association. We are a non-profit professional association of 160 locally-owned, “bricks and mortar” bookstores. The Association was begun almost 40 years ago in Denver and has grown to include booksellers in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. While we are called a “booksellers” association, we have always taken an expansive view of that term, and our membership includes as many publishers, wholesalers, and sales reps as it does bookstores. If you are an industry professional, established bookstore, or someone who is interested in opening a bookstore, you will find a wealth of information when you visit the “Bookseller” or “Publisher” pages.

If you are a member of the public, we have taken the liberty of describing you as a “Booklover”, and we encourage you to explore the pages in that section, where you can search for bookstores near you or at your travel destination, access bookstore websites and blogs, peruse recommended reading and book awards lists, watch author interviews, learn about current issues affecting the industry and the general public, and find information about bookstore and MPIBA events that are open to the public.
